Beer golf is two things: drinking games you play during a round of golf, and pub golf, the bar crawl scored like a round. Both are here, with a scorecard that tracks every player’s strokes and works out the sips for each bogey.

Beer Golf: quick rules
On the course: play your normal round and add a drinking rule or two, like a sip for every stroke over par (capped at 3) or for every ball in the water. At the pub: each bar is a “hole” with a par and a challenge. Keep score on the scorecard above; lowest total wins.
Golf drinking games for the course
Pick one or two of these; stacking them all turns a round into a mess. Always follow the course’s rules on alcohol, and never drive a golf cart after drinking.

Beer strokes (the handicap rule)
A popular social rule gives you one stroke off a hole if you declare it on the tee and finish a drink before you hole out, usually limited to a few uses a round. We suggest a gentler version: declare a “beer stroke” on the tee, and you get the stroke back if you’ve finished a drink by the end of the hole and had a glass of water on the previous hole. It still gives the high handicappers a chance without turning the back nine into a race.
Pub golf, the sensible way
Pub golf is a bar crawl scored like a round: each bar is a hole with a par. The classic version counts the sips it takes to finish a drink, which rewards gulping, and that’s how pub golf nights go wrong. Our version keeps the costumes, the scorecard and the tour of bars, and scores a challenge at each stop instead:
- Plan 6 or 9 “holes” (bars or rooms in your house) with a par of 3 each.
- At each hole, everyone orders a drink of their choice, including soft drinks. Every third hole is a water hole.
- Each hole has a challenge: darts, a pool shot, a trivia question, landing a bottle-cap flip. Strokes are your attempts to complete it.
- Penalties (+1 stroke): being on your phone, going to the toilet before the hole is finished, or forgetting to dress like a golfer.
- Lowest total wins; last place buys the waters.

Backyard beer golf
No course? Set up 9 cups in the garden as holes (a cup on its side makes a good hole) and use a putter and a ball, or throw a disc for disc-golf style. Par 3 each; a sip for every stroke over par, capped at 3. Pairs well with beersbee and the other outdoor drinking games.

- Scramble rules
- In a scramble, the team whose shot is chosen hands out a sip to the other teams.
- Closest to the pin
- On every par 3, the player closest to the pin hands out 2 sips.
- Water round
- Holes 9 and 18 are water holes: everyone drinks water, no exceptions.
Tips for a good game
- Check the course’s rules on bringing drinks: many only allow drinks bought on site.
- Nobody drives a golf cart after drinking.
- Drink water every hole on a hot day.
