Dice drinking games: quick rules
Most dice drinking games are one of two kinds: roll-and-react games, where certain numbers make certain people drink (Three Man, 7-11-doubles), and scoring games, where the lowest roll each round drinks (Mexican, Ship Captain Crew). Pick one below, set the number of dice, and roll.
Three Man
The classic: the first to roll a 3 becomes the Three Man and drinks whenever a 3 comes up. 7s, 11s, 9s and doubles hand out sips too. Full rules and automatic online dice on the Three Man page.
7, 11, doubles
Roll two dice. A 7: the player on your left takes a sip. An 11: the player on your right. Doubles: give out that many sips. Anything else: pass the dice. Quick, easy and great for big groups.
Mexican (Mex)
Each player rolls two dice once per round and reads the higher die first: a 5 and a 3 is 53. Doubles beat any mixed roll (1-1 beats 65) and 2-1, called “Mexico”, beats everything. The lowest roll of the round takes a sip, or two if someone rolled Mexico. In the bluffing version you roll under a cup, announce your score, and the next player can call your bluff.
Ship, Captain and Crew
Each player gets three rolls of five dice. You need a 6 (the ship), then a 5 (the captain), then a 4 (the crew), in that order; set each aside as you get it. Once you have all three, the remaining two dice are your cargo, and you can use leftover rolls to improve it. The lowest cargo, or anyone who never gets their crew, takes 2 sips.
High or Low
Before rolling two dice, call “high” (8 or more) or “low” (6 or less). A 7 counts as wrong either way. Wrong call: take a sip. Three right in a row: make a rule.
Beer dice (beer die)
Beer die is a different animal: a table game where teams toss a die in the air at the other team’s cups. See beer die rules for the table setup and scoring.
Dice drinking games variations
- Dice for 2 players
- 7-11-doubles and High or Low work well for two: 7 and 11 both mean the other player drinks.
- No-alcohol dice
- Every game here works with penalty points: set No alcohol in the Three Man game, or keep score on paper.
Tips for a good game
- Roll into a cup or tray so the dice stay on the table.
- Agree the house rules before the first roll.
- Keep sips small: dice games move fast.
Play it safe: every game here works with sips of any drink, or none at all. Only adults of legal drinking age should drink alcohol, alternate with water, and never drink and drive. [How to drink responsibly](/drink-responsibly/)
