Drunk UNO: quick rules

Play UNO as normal, but special cards come with sips: a Skip means the skipped player takes a sip, Draw Two means draw two and take two sips, Wild Draw Four means draw four and take three, forgetting to call UNO costs two, and when someone wins, everyone else takes sips for the cards still in their hand.

Drunk UNO rules, card by card

These are our standard rules (the first option in the builder). Every sip can be swapped for a penalty point with No alcohol mode.

How to play Drunk UNO

  1. Agree the rules first

Pick your house rules in the builder above (or use the standard ones), print the rule card or put the phone in the middle of the table.

  2. Deal 7 cards each

Normal UNO setup: 7 cards per player, turn over the top card of the deck to start the discard pile.

  3. Play UNO

Match the colour or number of the top card. Special cards do their normal job plus their drinking rule.

  4. Watch for UNO

When you are down to one card you must say “UNO”. Anyone who catches you forgetting before the next player plays sends you to the penalty.

  5. Win the round

First to play their last card wins the round, and everyone else pays for what is left in their hand (capped, so no one takes more than 5 sips).

Stacking Draw Twos (and why to cap it)

Official UNO rules don’t allow stacking, but most house games do: if someone plays a Draw Two on you, you can play your own Draw Two and pass it on. In Drunk UNO the final victim draws all the cards and takes a sip for each, so a long stack can get out of hand. Our builder offers stacking as an option; we recommend capping it at 5 sips, which the online sip cap does for you.

The 7-0 rule in Drunk UNO

The popular 7-0 house rule makes a 7 swap hands with another player and a 0 pass every hand along. For Drunk UNO we use the 7 as a table slap (last hand down takes a sip) by default, and keep the 0 as the hand-pass. Change either in the builder.

Drunk UNO variations

Drunk UNO for 2
Works well head to head. Use “the player who played it takes a sip” for Reverse (it acts as a Skip with two players).
Team Drunk UNO
Partners sit opposite each other and share penalties; the first team to empty both hands wins.
Speed UNO
Ten seconds per turn. Hesitate and take a sip, then draw a card.
UNO without alcohol
Choose No alcohol in the builder: every sip becomes a penalty point and the lowest total after five rounds wins.

Tips for a good game

  • Print the rule card and put it in the middle of the table; it ends arguments.
  • Decide on stacking and jump-ins before the first card.
  • Cap the round-end penalty so the unlucky player with 12 cards isn’t punished all night.

Play it safe: every game here works with sips of any drink, or none at all. Only adults of legal drinking age should drink alcohol, alternate with water, and never drink and drive. [How to drink responsibly](/drink-responsibly/)

Drunk UNO: FAQ

What are the rules of Drunk UNO?

Normal UNO plus sips: Skip = the skipped player takes 1, Reverse = the next player takes 1, Draw Two = draw 2 and take 2, Wild Draw Four = draw 4 and take 3, forgetting UNO = draw 2 and take 2, and when a round ends everyone else takes sips for the cards left in their hand (at most 5).

Can you stack Draw Twos in Drunk UNO?

Many houses allow it. The last person to be hit draws all the cards and takes a sip per card, so cap it at 5.

Can you play Drunk UNO with 2 people?

Yes. Reverse acts like a Skip with two players, so use the “player who played it takes a sip” option for Reverse.

Do I need a special deck for Drunk UNO?

No, a normal UNO® deck (or any similar shedding-card deck) works. Drunk UNO is a set of house rules, not a different game.

What does a Wild card do in Drunk UNO?

In our standard rules the player picks the colour and makes a rule for the rest of the round. Other options: pick someone to take a sip, or everyone takes a sip.
